The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Department
The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Department, also known as the DMV, handles things like vehicle titles and registration as well as driver licenses and identification cards. The DMV is a state agency. The Department also oversees the Florida Highway Patrol. Each county has at least one Driver License and Motor Vehicle Service, but they differ in the services they offer. You can find “Driver License Services Only” offices or dual offices where both are offered.
In order to register a vehicle in Florida, you’ll need the following documents: the original title of the car or truck and your proof of insurance If you’re from out-of-state and buy a car from someone who no longer lives in Florida, you will also need to bring the following documents with you: a driver’s license and a VIN. You can also apply for license plates or register farm equipment, recreational vehicles, and vessels at a Motor Vehicle Services Center.
You may have to complete a series of tests in order to get your Florida driver’s license. This includes the following:
- vision screening
- hearing test
- 50-question knowledge exam
- driving test
There are two types of driver licenses available; commercial and non-commercial. The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Department will also help you if you need to report a lost or stolen license, replace a license, or apply for a state identification card.
